42 million people in the US have some type of hearing loss or communication disorder, 14 million have speech, voice disorders, and  28 million have hearing impairment
Types of Communication Disorders
What is Autism
  1. Functional Communication Disorders: have no physical issues, they are thought of as ‘faulty learners’. Etc. sound production difficulties, language related problems, stuttering

  2. Organic communication disorders: occur as result of neurophysiological damage, (genetic variations, biochemical irregularities, brain trauma)-cleft palate, cerebral palsy

  3. Congenital communication disorders: born with this problem affect ability to develop normal communication skills. congenital deafness, cleft palate

  4. Acquired Communication Disorder: occur after a child or adult have developed normal communication skills(traumatic brain injury, stroke, severe illness)

  5. Degenerative communication disorders, worsen with time AIDS, Huntington

  6. Communication disorders can be categorized by language, articulation, voice, stuttering, and hearing

  1. Every year 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism

  2. Autism spectrum disorders vary in severity of symptoms, age of onset, as well as the presence of various features, mental intellectual handicap and language delay.

  3. Within the diagnosis of autism statistically more boys with autism than girls, 3 boys for every 1 girl, are diagnosed with autism.

  4. People with autism are more prone to repeat behaviors, not like changes in their schedule, and focus on one topic, which can cause these children to seem as though they are in their own world

What are speech therapists 
  1. There is a strong need for SLPs' having a large role in overall autism treatment. Now recognized that progress in social communication is an indicator of more positive outcomes and a higher quality of life for those on the autism spectrum

  2. SLP were discouraged from interacting with people with autism because of misinformation up until 1970’s

  3. SLPs work with the child on social and communication issues, paying attention, play, getting along, directions, ask questions, ask for help, feeding problems
